Miami-Dade County Public Schools Board member Perla Tabares-Hantman and Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho received the 2017 Hispanic Education Leadership Award during the third annual Hispanic Leadership Award Luncheon, which was hosted by the Hispanic Education Coalition of Palm Beach County, in partnership with the Jose Marti Foundation.

The event, during Hispanic Heritage Month, recognizes individuals who have made a difference in the lives of Hispanic students in South Florida through education.

“I would like to thank the Hispanic Education Coalition of Palm Beach County in partnership with the Jose Marti Foundation for this wonderful recognition,” said Hantman.

Hantman, whose district includes Miami Lakes and portions of Hialeah, was been a member of the School Board since 1996, and became the first Hispanic to serve as chair.

Carvalho has been superintendent since 2008, overseeing the fourth-largest school district in the United States with more than 346,000 students and 52,000 employees.

“I am thrilled to be recognized by the Hispanic Coalition of Palm Beach,” said Carvalho. “It is a great honor to be acknowledged by your peers for doing work that you love and that benefits all children and families.”
