Miami Lakes Library schedules October activities


Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs that are available for the public during October:

For Children and Families:

Movies and Stories for Kids – Watch favorite movies with family and friends. Movies being shown this month are “Ferdinand,” “Para Norman,” “Hocus Pocus,” and “Descendants 1 & 2.” Events made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays, October 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31.

Talking is Teaching. Talk, Read, Sing for Toddlers – Stories, songs and activities for toddlers. Best for ages 18 months to 3 years old at 11 a.m. on Thursdays, October 4, 11, 18 and 25.

STEAM: How to Build a Bridge – FIU’s student chapter of American Concrete Institute (ACI) will lead a two-house workshop about bridge design and construction. Space is limited. For information, contact the branch. Meets on Saturday, October 6, at noon.

Paws to Read – This reading program aims to improve the literacy skills of children through the assistance of therapy dogs who serve as literacy mentors. Bring a book of your own choosing or choose one from the library’s collection at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 13.

Peruvian Dance Showcase featuring Marinera 305 – Join for an interactive dance performance by Marinera 305, a dance school dedicated to sharing Peruvian culture and heritage with the community. All ages welcome. Event made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 20.

Science in the City – Enjoy hands-on lessons infused with experiments to spark interest in STEM. Each new lesson builds upon the previous. Space is limited so contact branch to register. Best for ages 8-12 years at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 27.

For Teens:

D & D and More - Create your own adventure with this classic role-playing game or play chess, Shadow Hunters, Magic, the Gathering and more. Best for ages 12 years and up at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays, October 15, 22 and 29.

The Art of Storytelling Learning Circle – What makes someone a good storyteller? Explore the storytelling process at Pixar and gain insight on how to write stronger stories during this free six-week online course. Best for ages 8-18. Meets at 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, October 9, 16, 23 and 30. 

Sci-Fi Makeup Demo – Celebrate this year’s Teen Read Week theme, “It’s Written in the Stars...Read!,” with an  out of this world makeup demo! Special effects makeup artist Tabitha Sciafani will demonstrate a number of techniques to create sci-fi themed makeup. Best for ages 12-18 years at 5 p.m. on Monday, October 15.

For Adults: 

Purls of Wisdom – Learn basic knitting and stitching. Materials will be provided. Best for ages 18 and up at 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, October 9, 16, 23 and 30.

Strum the Lute: Tai Chi for Beginners – Practice this ancient tradition and learn gentle movements to increase strength, flexibility and balance. Class is led by library staff. Best for ages 18 and up at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays, October 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31.

Meditation – Join in mediation derived from Raja Yoga, a discipline that helps develop inner calm, clear thinking and personal well-being. Meets at 11 a.m. on Fridays, October 5, 12, 19 and 26.

Citizenship Information Session – The Florida Immigrant Coalition, in collaboration with the Office of New Americans, will be available to answer questions in the process and requirements of filing for citizenship. Meets at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 13.

Book Discussion Group – This month’s selection is “Code to Zero” by Ken Follett at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 16.

My Miami Story - The Miami Foundation - Everyone who lives in Miami has a story. How did you get here? What keeps you here: What can we do to improve our community? When we have a chance to talk about our experiences and hear others, we connect and learn about what matters to all of us. Join the conversation at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 23. Light refreshments will be served.

Mario Diaz-Balart Outreach Table - A member of Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart’s staff will be available to discuss federal issues and address any concerns a constituent may have with a federal agency, at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 24.

Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.
