STU women’s volleyball team wins Sun Conference awards

The regular season champion St. Thomas University women’s volleyball team had a busy night collecting awards at The Sun Conference Championship Awards Banquet held at the Fernandez Family Center.

Senior outside hitter Whitney Battoe won The Sun Conference Player of the Year Award for the second time in her career and was also named First-Team All-Conference. Battoe, who was also the 2015 Sun Conference Player of the Year, hit .294 against conference opponents on the season, averaging 3.68 kills-per-set in league play.

Battoe was joined on the First-Team by senior teammates Carly Durr and Kimberly Martino. Durr ranked second on the team with 321 total kills and 2.89 kills-per-set. Martino dished out 1,035 assists on the year with an average of 9.24 assists-per-set.

St. Thomas also led all teams with seven Academic All-Sun Conference recipients. Battoe, Durr, Martino, Carli Batsel, Veronica Gomez, Kelli Kosydor and Stacey Spalding all were named to the All-Academic team for their excellence in the classroom.

The Bobcats as a team, under the direction of first-year head coach Kera Dukic, were also honored as regular-season Sun Conference Champions at the banquet. The Bobcats went 15-1 in conference play to clinch the regular-season title.
