FIU's Alec Dominguez will chair SAAC advisory group

Florida International University cross country runner Alec Dominguez was elected as the chair of the Conference USA Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at the July meetings in Frisco, Texas.

Dominguez, a senior from Weston, Florida, will lead the group of 14 representatives from C-USA universities, who annually lead community service initiatives, discuss hot topics affecting collegiate athletics, and engage the student bodies at their respective schools.

“It means a lot being elected chair of C-USA SAAC,” said Dominguez. “Leading this special group of athletes from across the conference is truly a great honor.”

Dominguez is the first FIU student athlete to be elected to this position at the C-USA level, and is excited to hit the ground running and share his vision moving forward.

“A major initiative I look forward to tackling is mental health and breaking the stigma that surrounds student athletes,” Dominguez said. “This is an initiative that I look towards accomplishing not only on campus, but also throughout the conference.”

Dominguez is notably involved on campus, as the president of the Student Athlete Leadership Council and the FIU SunBlazers fan club. He has also served as a captain for the FIU Athletics Relay for Life team.

Earlier this year, Dominguez also earned the C-USA Spirit of Service Award. Dominguez posted 3.1 GPA in recreation in Sports Management this past semester, while finishing in the top 20 in the 1500m at the C-USA Outdoor Championships, and logged his best 1500m outdoor time of 4:32.32 at the University of Miami Alumni Invitational.
