Shula’s athletic club, located at 15150 Bull Run Road, is under new management. General manager Anthony Artiles has many advancements coming for regular members. Since he began back in September, Artiles has opened a new boxing room and revamped childcare center, keeping up with the theme of a family athletic club. Artiles has also successfully partnered with local businesses like Ana G. Mendez University. In fact, for Breast Cancer Awareness month, Artiles raised $3,000 for research.
“We want to work with most of the commercial tenants that are part of The Graham Companies, and work with them in offering corporate memberships,” Artiles explained. “We’re also offering team-building corporate events.”
With 19 years of knowledge, Artiles also has experience with working at various Shula departments, including being director of Operations from 2005 to 2008. He’s opened seven athletic clubs throughout South Florida and the Dominican Republic as well. He’s also an American Senior High School alumni. In addition to the boxing room, Artiles has been implementing new exercise machines and youth programs.
“The one thing we’re looking at is how to enhance and be able to let members enjoy all the services that we offer. There’s a big difference between an athletic club and a gym,” said Artiles. “We cater to so many different segments of our member base.”
Shula’s has been a community staple since its opening back in 1982. Artiles emphasizes that in his new role as general manager, he doesn’t plan on making too many changes.
“It’s just a continuation of what the Shula’s club has always been. Some of our younger members (from past summer camps) are now coming back with their families. They came here since they were about 13 something years old, and now they’re bringing their kids for summer camp,” Artiles said.
