Business Wednesday, April 15, 2020

The Orange Bowl Committee is accepting applications until May 15 for the Beigel-Feis-Hixon Valor Award.
It is named for Scott Beigel, Aaron Feis and Chris Hixon, coaches at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who gave their lives for students and colleagues and were among 17 killed during a mass shooting in Parkland on Feb. 14, 2018.
The award has a $10,000 scholarship for an outstanding student-athlete from Miami-Dade, Broward or Palm Beach counties.
The high school senior must not already be receiving a full athletic scholarship, should have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 and will have taken one of five actions that demonstrate extraordinary courage, the non-profit said.
The student should have acted against adversity; shown compassion; stood up for principles and values; expanded his or her horizons or have persevered, with dignity or faith, through suffering.
A 500 word essay is part of the application, as is an official high school transcript and a letter of recommendation from a coach, teacher or counselor that describes the student’s character, scholastic and athletic accomplishments and difficulties that were overcome.
