Councilmembers, business leaders tour Amazon facility

Miami Lakes officials and members of the town’s Economic Development
Committee toured Amazon’s
$92 million fulfillment center on Oct. 15.
There are 1,500 employees working at the 855,000 square foot facility at
Miami-Opa-locka Executive Airport.
It opened in June, and Miami-Dade County had said the company was to pay $1.2 million in annual rent to the county Aviation Department.
Robots work alongside about 1,500 people. Jobs will increase to 2,400 for peak seasons and Amazon is beginning to hire for those positions.
Scanning machines and computer systems can track millions of items in one day, Amazon said.
This facility handles items that are 25 pounds or less.
Amazon said they abide by the $15 hourly minimum wage. Benefits begin on a worker’s first day.

Councilman Joshua Dieguez, Town Manager Edward Pidermann, Deputy Town Manager Tony Lopez and staffers Clarisell De Cardenas; Willie Sanchez and Brandon Diaz all got a peek inside.
In a post on Facebook, Dieguez called the facility an “Awesome blend of
technology and people to deliver excellent service for customers, whether sellers or buyers.”
