After the coronavirus pandemic led to the shutdown of the Miami Lakes Elderly Affairs Committee’s weekly bingo luncheons, Committee Chair Dottie Wix organized distributions of meals provided by restaurants in town for those who can drive and pick up their meals. The Freebee delivers lunches to those who are housebound. Sponsored by the Town of Miami Lakes, the volunteers seek to relieve hunger and loneliness among Miami Lakes’ senior citizens. On Jan. 27, 137 people enjoyed pies from Pizza Scene and cupcakes from LA Sweetz bakery, both on Main Street. Shown in the photos provided by volunteer Tico Casamayor, president of AC Graphics: Elderly Affairs Committee Chair Dottie Wix, Nancy Rogers, chair of the Miami Lakes Public Safety Committee and Miami Dade Police Maj. Javier Ruiz, who leads the agency’s station in town. In the second photo, Pizza Scene owner Hector Rodriguez awaits the rush.
