The Florida Society of Enrolled Agents named Roberto Pons the 2023-24 Enrolled Agent of the Year at its gala on June 7 at the Sheraton Tampa Brandon Hotel in Tampa.
“It’s a nice thing and I was surprised,” Pons said of the award, given in recognition for 20 years of promoting awareness and service to the Enrolled Agent community and to the public in general. “It was unexpected.”
Enrolled Agents are licensed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service.
The award honors an individual who actively promotes the profession, enhances professionalism, exemplifies high ethical standards and mentors new members, the organization said on its website.
Pons, 63, was born in Cuba and arrived in the United States in 1980, during the Mariel Boatlift.
He worked for two decades in banking and for three years as comptroller of a multinational corporation.
Pons became an Enrolled Agent in 2003 and that year, founded Pons and Associates accounting services in Miami Lakes.
He has served several roles within the Florida Society of Enrolled Agents and was previously elected president of its board of directors.
In 2012, Pons became a graduate and fellow of the National Tax Practice Institute. He teaches students for the Special Enrollment Examination at Miami Dade College and leads seminars for Enrolled Agents and the public.
Pons lives in Miramar, with his wife Zoila, and they have an adult son, Roberto.
