Hispanic Heritage event set for Saturday, October 20

Community Thursday, October 4, 2018

In honor of National Hispanic Month, Miami Lakes Cultural Affairs Committee will present “Que Rico Es!” National Hispanic Celebration from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, October 20, at Town Hall, 6601 Main Street.

A special presentation on the history of Cuban soda will be given by Marcel van Hemert, heir to the Cawy Bottling Company. Cawy is a soda beverage company founded in Cuba in 1948 and nationalized after the Cuban Revolution in 1959.

Two of the company’s executives emigrated to the United States and restarted the brand in 1962, first offering lemon-lime soda, and then diversifying outside of that competitive market by offering Materva (a yerba mate flavored soda) and other tropical flavors.

The free event will feature traditional Cuban cuisine, music, art, and of course, Cafecito!
