'Jerry's Squad' returns to aid seniors in hurricane prep

Community Wednesday, January 31, 2018

If you are an elderly Town of Miami Lakes resident who will need assistance with hurricane preparation for the 2018 Hurricane Season, your needs will be answered. Miami Lakes Elderly Affairs Committee (EAC) is bringing back “Jerry’s Squad,” a Hurricane Preparedness Assistance Program for seniors or disabled residents.

The initiative was created by former Councilmember Tony Lama in memory of longtime resident, U.S. Korean War veteran, and former Elderly Affairs Committee member Jerry Schneider.

Seniors (65 or older) or disabled residents must fill out an application indicating the type of assistance they will need, along with names, address, and contact information. Applications will be reviewed by the EAC to determine if the applicant meets eligibility requirements.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and must apply and submit a background check form.

Deadline to submit both applications is Tuesday, May 1. For applications, visit www.miamilakes-fl.gov/eac, or for more information, contact Elderly Affairs Committee Town Liaison Nathalie Garcia at garcian@miamilakes-fl.gov, or 305-364-6100, ext. 1166.
