Miami Lakes Branch Library plans June events

Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs that are available for the public during June:

For Children and Families:

Libraries Rock! Zumba for Families – Summer Reading Kickoff. The class is perfect for younger Zumba fans. The whole family can be active and jam out to their favorite music. Presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory board at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 2.

Father’s Day Painting – Have fun by creating a painting for daddy on his day. Space is limited. Call or visit the branch for registration. Event will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 5.

Pete the Cat’s Rockin’ Library Jam – Pet the Cat - the coolest and calmest cat in town - is reach to teach little ones not to worry. See Eric Litwin’s groovy stories come to life through song and dance. Presented by the Miami Children’s Museum and made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 9.

Libraries Rock! Rocking Crafts! – Create fun crafts at the library. Space is limited. Call or visit the branch for registration. Event will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12.

Kids Yoga – A yoga session designed especially for children. Participants will learn about relaxation and breathing techniques to calm the mind, increase concentration and focus, and develop confidence. Games, stories, and other playful activities will stimulate imaginations and get young bodies moving - all while having fun. Best for ages 5 years and up. Presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 14.

Engineering an Egg Drop – Discover the wonders of engineering and physics as participants team up with others to build an “egg craft.” This free-falling vessel will protect a special egg that tracks gravity, mass, density and other properties of physics. Presented by the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science. Best for ages 7 years and up. Made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 16.

Libraries Rock! Board Game Hour – Enjoy an hour of playing classic board games while making new friends at the Library. Space is limited. Contact branch for registration. Event will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19.

DJ for a Day with Girls Make Beats – Set hot cues, scratch a track, and juggle beats while learning about the technology that goes into making modern music, sound production and audio engineering. Space is limited. Contact branch to register. Best for ages 12 years and up. Made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 23.

Libraries Rock! Storytime Craft Ideas – Create children’s toys using unconventional materials. Space is limited. Call or visit the branch to register. Event will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 26.

Interactive Rock Concert – Unleash your own inner rock star! Play battle of the bands-themed musical games and use props to really rock the library. Best for ages 5-14 years. Presented by RockStar 101 with a special visit by the library’s Technobus. Made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 30.  

For Teens:

Libraries Rock! Dungeons and Dragons and more - Play this fantasy role playing game and create your own adventure. Sign up at the front desk for a chance to run the show. For ages 12 and up at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays, June 4, 11 and 25.

Teen Club – Let’s discuss Simon vs. The Home Sapiens Agenda, the basis for the Movie “Love, Simon.” Event will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 5.

Libraries Rock! Teen Club – Create a distinctive piece of rock art. Materials provided at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12

Libraries Rock! Hour of Code – Broaden knowledge in computer science. Hour of Code aims to demystify coding and prove that anyone can learn the basics of this useful skill. Best for ages 8-18 years at 5 p.m. on Monday, June 18.

Teen Club presents Libraries Rock! Talent Showcase – Show what kind of rock star you are. Space is limited. Contact branch to register. Best for ages 12-18 years at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26.  

For Adults: 

Back to Work at 50+ – An AARP Foundation-created program of Job Search Assistance and Training for Adults 50 and Over. For additional information, contact AARP at 855-850-2525. Event scheduled at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 13.

Book Discussion Group – This month’s selection is “Wright Brothers” by David McCullum at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19.

USCIS Information Table – United States Citizenship and Immigration staff will provide information, materials, and answer general question about the citizenship process at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, June 20. 

Mario Diaz-Balart Outreach Table - A member of Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart’s staff will be available to discuss federal issues and address any concerns a constituent may have with a federal agency, at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27.

Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.
