The Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce presented three scholarships to college students during its January luncheon.

“This is one of the things [Past Chamber President] Fred [Senra] and I had spoken about, that what I really wanted to do was give out more scholarships,” Chamber President Ray Palacios said.

Hialeah Campus President Dr. Georgette Perez attended with students Fidel Rodriguez, Megan Garcia and German Ortiz, who each received $1,000 to apply toward their tuition.  Other scholarship recipients who attend Miami Dade College and Ana G. Mendez University were not present.

This year, for the first time, the Chamber gave out a total of $8,000 in scholarships. The scholarships are funded from membership dues and ticket sales from events throughout the year; the amounts have grown from $500 per applicant to $1,000 for each selected student, the chamber said.

“This makes me so happy, to see this actually come to fruition,” Palacios said.
