Dr. Carlos Mauri, an optometrist and a partner in Mauri Eye Associates in Miami Lakes, died on Feb. 4 following a brief battle with cancer.
Mauri, of Coral Gables was 57.
A funeral Mass was held Feb. 14 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Key Biscayne.
Mauri was well known in Miami Lakes, where he practiced for 30 years alongside his business partner, Dr. Ramon Moran.
Known as an empathetic doctor whose calm manner put patients at ease, Moran said his colleague cared for many of his patients for many years.
“If a person came in and they were grumpy or difficult, he would always say, ‘We don’t know what is going on in their lives, their homes and their business. Let’s give them the benefit of the doubt and let’s do our best,’” Moran said.
Moran called Mauri “a great practitioner and very skilled.”
Outside of the office, Mauri was a loving father, husband and a loyal friend, Moran said.
Mauri also attracted a devoted staff.
“His staff was incredibly loyal, no one leaves, [he] inspires tremendous loyalty,” Moran said.
Mauri was born in Venezuela and began his career there after graduating from Colegio de Optometristas de Venezuela in Caracas.
Mauri met his wife Vivian when he was in his early 20’s and the couple moved to the United States, where he attended the New England School of Optometry in Boston, graduating with honors, Moran said.
Mauri joined Moran’s practice in Miami Lakes in 1992.
Moran said they never fought or disagreed on an issue during their three decades working together.
When he wasn’t at work, Mauri played golf. He also rooted for World Cup soccer and Barcelona FC, and was a fan of the Miami Heat and the Miami Dolphins, too.
In addition to his wife, Mauri is survived by their daughters Viviana and Bettina.
Mauri Eye Associates will continue to see patients. Two new doctors have joined the practice, Moran said.
