In the southeastern corner of Miami Lakes Business Park West is Select Specialty Hospital - Miami Lakes

It is among several health care facilities in the park, including dentists, doctors, screening centers and the Baptist Emergency Center planned for Northwest 77th Court at Northwest 149th Street.

The campus at Northwest 77th Court and Northwest 82nd Avenue provides care for recovering, critically ill patients.

Monica Madrigal, chief executive officer of the Miami Lakes location, said the hospital’s focus is to help patients breathe, speak, eat, walk and think as independently as possible.

“In Miami Lakes we saw the need [of] the top referring community hospitals,” Madrigal said.

The hospital’s parent company acquired Promise Hospital in April 2019; it has 60 beds.

Near Select Specialty Hospital - Miami Lakes is Avanti Nutrition Laboratories and General Restaurant Supply, a green and white landmark for travelers on nearby highways.

Between the hospital and a canal and the Palmetto Expressway is K-9 Cove, the Miami Lakes dog park.

Avanti Nutritional Laboratories, which produces a full range of nutritional supplements, faces a serene pasture of Holstein dairy cows who graze across Commerce Way.

The laboratory makes supplements in tablets, capsules, powders and soft gels, according to its website.

Select Specialty Hospital - Miami Lakes is part of a network of post-acute care hospitals that include critical illness recovery and inpatient rehabilitation hospitals. Its parent company is headquartered in Mechanicsburg, Pa.

Madrigal said it was the needs of the patient population that made Miami Lakes a good choice, but like many business owners in the park, having highways nearby also drew the health care company there.

“We’re four miles away from [the] Palmetto Expressway, I-75 is 1.7 miles, it’s pretty accessible,” Madrigal said.

The facility is also a teaching hospital and has contracts with St. Thomas University, Business Park neighbor Antigua College International and Nova Southeastern University, among others, she said.

In the 1980s, The Graham Companies developed the office park that is built along two miles on the west side of town.

The Miami Lakes Architecture and Control Committee for Commercial properties enforces protective covenants for the design and height of new buildings in the park.
