Retired U.S. Marine Col. William G. Perez drew from his extensive military experience to share with the Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce how the U.S. government protects American commerce and banking around the world.

“Without good national security, you do not have a business here,” Perez told 50 business owners and veterans at the Miami Lakes Hotel on Main on Nov. 8.

Perez explained how foreign wars cause problems here at home and how pirates or military blockades can disrupt trade routes. Computer hacks can affect banking, and the American dollar is the world’s most valuable currency, he said.

He also mapped out how the U.S. military watches over continents and the different ways past presidential administrations have fought wars, e.g., using might versus a transactional approach.

The next chamber luncheon is Dec. 13 with speaker Dr. Georgette Perez, Miami Dade College Hialeah campus president.  For a reservation go to MiamiLakesChamber.com.
