Sergio’s Cuban Cafe + Grill welcomed customers with a bash that felt like a block party on Oct. 5, when a DJ accompanied Glenda Anders as she sang Que bonita es esta vida! or, How beautiful is this life.
Sergio’s Cuban Cafe + Grill, at 15135 NW 67th Ave., is the latest restaurant to open along the town’s mini restaurant row that also features the soon to arrive Jersey Mike’s Subs, and Bolay, which opened Sept. 13.
Manny Rodriquez, franchisee of Sergio’s Cuban Cafe + Grill in Miami Lakes, said he is fond of the town where he played baseball as a boy.
“I’ve always admired the unity in the community,” he said. Rodriguez also praised the town’s ambiance.
Sergio’s Cuban Café + Grill is part of the Sergio’s chain founded by Blanca Rosa Cabrera, which has served South Floridians since 1975 and is owned by her son, Carlos Gazitua.
The Miami Lakes location is the company’s 13th restaurant, and the seventh of its “fast casual” eateries that offer some classics from the original Sergio’s menu and also serve lighter, healthier fare.
Breakfast is served all day. There are also wraps and dishes made with egg whites, and freshly squeezed juices including orange and watermelon.
From a menu of bowls, customers may choose ingredients such as citrus grilled chicken, brown rice, cauliflower rice and greens. There are black beans or sweet plantains to add, or quinoa, or guacamole.
There is Cilantro cream sauce, a customer favorite, to top it all off, and a new sauce, too, called BBQ Guava.
Unveiled at the Miami Lakes location on opening day was a new dish that will appeal to those who don’t eat meat or soy: a plant-based frita, or burger.
It has toppers the Sergio’s beef and chorizo burger comes with: American Cheese, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato and house made string potatoes, with Sergio’s Sauce, all on a Martin’s potato bun.
Traditionalists will find ropa vieja (shredded beef); pan con bistec (steak sandwich with cheese on Cuban bread); vaca frita (fried beef); black beans, croquetas (bite-sized ham that is fried) as well as pastries made from guava and cheese on the menu.
And of course, there is Cuban coffee to wash it all down.
As more “bowl” restaurants pop up around town, Sergio’s Cuban Café + Grill prides itself on being unique.
Offering breakfast all day is one way they do that, said Gabriel Subero, marketing director.
Sergio’s Cuban Café + Grill is open seven days a week: Sunday – Thursday, 7 a.m. - 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 7 a.m. - 11 p.m. There is parking behind the restaurant. For more information call 305-508-9881 or visit www.sergioscuban.com.
