Back to school with backpacks

The town’s culture of compassion and charity continues Aug. 15 during the Mayor’s Back to School Drive-thru held at Miami Lakes Town Hall.  More than 300 brightly colored backpacks filled with a variety of school supplies -- which included masks; hand sanitizer; computer flash drives and headphones with microphones for use during online classes -- were prepared for students in need, said Daylin Garcia of the Giving Gators charity, one of the sponsors. The event was co-hosted by sponsors Gold Financial Services; Layer 8 Solutions; The Therapy Labs; Specialty Smiles Orthodontics; Pharma Natural; Papa John’s Pizza in Miami Lakes; Vicky Bakery’s Miami Lakes location; Miami Dade County Public Library and the Town of Miami Lakes’ Education Advisory Board, Special Needs Advisory Board and Public Safety Committee. Families registered for the drive-thru on Eventbrite, announced on Facebook pages for the town and Giving Gators. Demand was so great, the original plan to give away supplies to 200 children was expanded and 300 backpacks were prepared, Garcia said.
