Beware of kids, dogs, ducks and cows, new signs warn speeders

Carlos Andres said he was getting a lot of calls.

Residents were complaining to the chair of the Miami Lakes Public Safety Committee, asking if there was anything that could be done to slow down drivers in town.

“It’s pretty bad,” Andres said. “A lot of Miami Lakers are speeding. It’s not just people from outside.”

The speed on main roads is 30 mph, and it's 25 mph in most neighborhoods.

He spent $1,283 from the committee budget to buy 150 yellow signs that warn motorists to Slow Down – Keep Miami Lakes Safe.

He put icons on the signs for cows, ducks, kids and dogs.

Why did he make those choices? Andres said residents have seen an occasional cow running loose from a pasture, and there are lots of ducks that don’t stay on sidewalks.

And sadly, kids and dogs may run into traffic, too.

The signs have been planted in grass on the east and west sides of town and in some of the tot lots that face busy streets, he said.

“Residents can get one for their front yard,” Andres said. “It has to comply with HOA rules, and it can’t be put in a swale.”

He said he belongs to several neighborhood chat groups that have experienced duck deaths from collisions with cars.

“The community has been extremely supportive,” Andres said.
