Boy Scouts of America is accepting girl scouts, and Troop 566, chartered out of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School, has a sister Troop, 566G.
The girls joined the boys at the South Florida Council Phoenix District Camporee in Davie from March 31 - April 2 and proved to be able scouts, too.
They entered the Wilderness Survival event, with tests in knot tying, fire building, archery; BB guns; First Aid, pioneering and more, said scout leader Sean Schwinghammer.
The boys’ troop was recognized for construction of their camp gateway and building a wilderness survival shelter. The girls’ troop won the Tug of War.
Both troops tied for first place in the skit competition, he said.
The weekend’s contests left the Miami Lakes scouts in third place overall, Schwinghammer said.
Senior Patrol Leaders are Cesar Hernandez for the boy’s troop and Camryn Welch for the girls.
“We are so proud of them,” said girls’ Scout Master Ginger Welch about her troop’s first experience in competitive camping.
“They distinguished themselves among all the scouts and gained confidence,” she said in an email.
Boys and girls are welcome to join the troops.
