Miami Lakes Cars for a Cure invades Main Street, as thousands of people will gather to raise money and awareness for cancer and enjoy great entertainment, food and classic cars.

The Sunday, April 8 event, sponsored by AutoNation, The Graham Companies and Miami- Dade County Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr., is from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., and features Miami Lakes first Beer Garden with local craft beers, a pig roast and Paella.

All of the proceeds will go to the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center to find a cure for the deadly disease. Back by popular demands is ManTrap with DJ Alex Gutierrez, who will playing live music all day. A host of classic cars will be on display and awards and gift certificates to local restaurants for winners of the People Choice Awards will be given out.

For a $20 donation, participants will be able to sample many local beers and try some delicious pig and Paella. In addition, the popular Classic Cocktails truck will be on hand to serve the participants at the social occasion. Any residents interested in displaying their cars are asked to arrive before 9 a.m. and there is a $20 registration donation that goes to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Roberto Alonso Jr., the event’s organizer, said this year will be bigger than in previous years. Last year, the event raised $23,853.

“The people will enjoy great food and entertainment,” he said. “This year’s goal is to raise $40,000, and we need the community to participate to achieve that goal.”

The Cars for a Cure event is in honor of former Miami Lakes vice mayor Roberto Alonso Sr., who had a love for classic cars and organized the first classic car show on Main Street. He died of cancer in 2013.
