May 4. Memorial Day Poetry Contest Deadline. The Town of Miami Lakes and the Veterans Committee are calling for submissions of an original poem using the following prompt:  “What Memorial Day means to me…”.  The poem must be no more than two minutes in length when read aloud and the writer must be a student who is a town resident or attends a school in Miami Lakes. Prizes include a $25 Visa gift card, publication of the poem on town social media platforms and recitation of the poem at the town’s Memorial Day Event. May 4. Youth open Hang at The Spot. Town of Miami Lakes Youth Center, 6075 Miami Lakes Drive, Miami Lakes. Kids ages 5 to 12 can enjoy a “Star Wars”-themed open hang at The Spot with food and refreshments. 5:30 p.m. Free. 

May 5. National Day of Prayer. Gather at the Town of Miami Lakes Town Hall to pray for the United States. Worshippers of all faiths are welcome. 6601 Main St. Free. 10 a.m. 

May 6. Congressional Art Competition and Exhibition/Reception.  Mary Collins Community Center, 15151 NW 82nd Ave., Miami Lakes. Free. 6 p.m. - 9 p.m.

May 6. Teen Open Hang at The Spot. Town of Miami Lakes Youth Center, 6075 Miami Lakes Drive, Miami Lakes. Enjoy fun, food and refreshments at The Spot. Free. 6 p.m. 

May 11 Bingo Luncheon.  Roberto Alonso Community Center, 16500 NW 87th Ave., 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Sponsored by the Town of Miami Lakes and the Elderly Affairs Committee. Limited to players age 60+. Free. 

May 18. Informational Forum Decision Day 2022   Miami Lakes Town Hall, 6601 Main Street, Miami Lakes. Learn about the importance of planning ahead, including about advanced directives, living wills and health care surrogates among other end of life preparation topics. Presented by the Elderly Affairs Committee and Catholic Hospice. Free. 11 a.m. 

May 30. Veterans Committee Memorial Day Ceremony. Veterans Park, 15151 NW 82 Ave., Miami Lakes. Free. 11 a.m. - Noon.
