Two candidates for the Miami Lakes Town Council have launched their campaigns.

Business owner Mario O. Pinera Jr. is running for Seat 1, currently held by Vice Mayor Tony Fernandez and attorney Steven Herzberg is running for Seat 5, held by Councilman Luis Collazo. Realtor Juan Carlos Fernandez is seeking Seat 3, held by Councilwoman Marilyn Ruano. Fernandez has not held his launch party yet.

Pinera serves as chair on the Education Advisory Board. He held a party on Jan. 25 at the Garrison Taproom. Herzberg is secretary on the Blasting Advisory Board and welcomed supporters on Feb. 7 at Trattoria Pampered Chef restaurant.

Other candidates and elected officials were seen at both parties. Mayor Manny Cid attended both events, as did Councilman Ray Garcia. Vice Mayor Tony Fernandez, who is running for mayor, was at Pinera’s kick-off.

Pinera, Herzberg and Fernandez were unopposed as of Feb. 9. If they do not have challengers after the qualifying period in August, they will win and will end their campaigns before the Nov. 5 election.
