Florida International University’s Department of Occupational Therapy is partnering with Shula’s Athletic Club for a CarFit event on April 8 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Shula’s Athletic Club parking lot just south of Main Street in Miami Lakes.

The event is free and open to the public of all ages but particularly for older drivers to improve the fit of their vehicle for safety and comfort. CarFit is a national program developed by AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association. Those leading the event are graduate students from FIU’s occupational therapy department which is a cohort of 54 students, class of 2018.

With physical changes that come with age, it’s important to make adjustments to improve safety, including adjustment to vehicles and the way drivers sit inside them. The students will be making suggestions on how to adjust the seat and mirrors to break poor habits that lead to excessive wear and tear on the body and even injury.

Every participant in the event will have a form with a list of recommendations of vehicle adjustments and a gift bag with information on driver safety. Bilingual students will be available to help those who speak only Spanish.

To attend the CarFit event, register on site and park vehicles in designated areas for assessment. For more information visit www.car-fit.org
