Miami Lakes Community and Leisure Services Department was recently recognized in the Florida Recreation and Park Association (FRPA) Journal’s 2013 Facility Showcase edition. The FRPA Facility Showcase recognizes and celebrates newly built facilities and parks that contribute to the success and value of parks and recreation in the State of Florida.
The edition feature not only the Sevilla Estates Park, but also Phase 1 of the town’s Greenways Trails.
“Yet another recognition for the Miami Lakes Parks system,” said Vice Mayor Manny Cid. “Our parks and recreation team are dedicated to providing the best service to our residents.”
Sevilla Estates Park was completed in March 2013 on a vacant lot that was donated by the Florida Department of Transportation and constructed with funds from the Kaboom! Playful City USA Challenge Grant, the Miami-Dade County Safe Neighborhood Parks Program, and the Land and Water Conservation Fund. A community-build approach, the playground’s design incorporated ideas from drawing submitted by local children.
Phase 1 of the Greenways Trails project opened in 2012 which included the conversion of an overgrown right-of-way along N.W. 170 Street into a safe, one mile recreational pathway for pedestrians and bicyclists with rest and observation areas along the canal. The project was funded by a Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant.
“We are honored to have received this recognition and congratulate our Community and Leisure Services Department for all of their great work to make the Town of Miami Lakes truly a great place to play,” said Mayor Wayne Slaton.
