Miami Lakes Boy Scout Troop 566 led a flag retirement ceremony for weathered and worn American flags on Saturday, February 11, at the Veteran’s Memorial site located in front of Town Hall.

The scouts began the ceremony by reciting the regulations for proper flag disposal as found in the U.S. Flag Code. The Flag Code states that when an American flag is no longer fit for display due to weathering, fading or tattering, it should be disposed of in a dignified manner - the most common of which is burning.

With a proper salute to the American Flag, the Boy Scouts, one by one delicately handed the retired American flags into the fire. Following suit, Girl Scout Troop 247 joined them making several silent trips back and forth until the last flag was placed into the fire. Spectators also took a moment to pay their respects for these worn-out flags and to watch the flames as the flags retired. Troop 566 meets weekly at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
