Florida's Sales Tax Holiday offers Back-to-School savings on supplies

Education Wednesday, July 30, 2014

Miami Lakes area residents can take advantage of Florida’s Sales Tax Holiday to purchase school supplies and clothes tax free for the upcoming school year, from Friday, August 1 to Sunday, August 3.

The tax free items include clothing, footwear, certain clothing accessories, notebooks, notebook paper, tablets, folders, pencils, pens, sharpeners, calculators, rulers, crayons, markers and staplers.

For a number of years, the Florida Legislature has authorized a sales-tax-free weekend for basic school supplies in advance of the opening of a new school year.

The 2014 three-day sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m., Friday, August 1, and ends at midnight on Sunday, August 3.

No Florida sales tax or local option tax will be collected during the time on sales for school-related clothes and materials selling for $75 or less per item, on certain school supplies selling for $15 of less per item, and on computers and certain related accessories selling for $750 or less per item when purchased for noncommercial home or personal use.

As all public schools have moved to wireless access and instructional materials and state assessments are moving rapidly to digital formats, the Sales Tax Holiday offers an opportunity for families to save funds while providing their children with needed educational supplies.
