About 40 friends, neighbors and colleagues surprised Realtor Rosa Nell Hammer at her Lake Sandra home in Miami Lakes on Oct. 2, for the occasion of her 101st birthday.

“She said it was the best birthday she’s ever had, that says a lot since she has enjoyed so many of them,” said Alex Ruiz, Hammer’s manager at The Keyes Company in Miami Lakes.

Rain and the persistent coronavirus pandemic could not keep well-wishers – who included Hammer’s son Brent Hammer and daughter-in-law Sandra Hammer – away from the party.

Graham Companies executive Beth Graham Martinez and Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid also attended the party.

Hammer, who is still an active Realtor, has traveled the world.  Her husband Harvey Hammer and two of their four children are no longer living.

Hammer’s passion for orchids has taken her to international competitions, and a gold and yellow striped Cattelya with ruffled edges is named for her.

Friends marvel at Hammer’s amazing memory, work ethic and independence.

Saxophonist Norlan Dias serenaded Hammer with the song, “My Way,” made famous by Frank Sinatra, who is one of her favorite singers, Ruiz said.

The group celebrated with Hammer’s favorite dishes from Casavana Cuban Cuisine and a cake.
