Golf today, fresh water tomorrow

A nonprofit is looking for golfers who want to hit the links in Miami Lakes for a good cause.

Blue Missions is hosting the Blue Golf Classic, presented by Rize Mortgage, on Monday, October 19 at Miami Lakes Golf Club. Organizers are hoping to draw nearly 130 participants to raise money for the organization, which leads projects to provide clean water and sanitation in the Dominican Republic. The group’s slogan is “Water For All, Forever.” The group takes young volunteers to the Dominican Republic for the work, and also runs programs for children and teenagers in the U.S.

The group is now seeking foursomes and sponsors. Participants will receive lunch and dinner, player gifts and on-course giveaways. There will be an awards ceremony after.

Money raised at the event will help Blue Missions with its work in the Dominican Republic. Since its founding in 2010, the group has connected more than 45,000 people in the DR to clean water and more than 14,000 people to sanitation.

Blue Mission builds gravity-driven aqueducts with carbon filters that bring higher-elevation fresh water into villages where they are needed. They also build “ventilated improved pit (VIP) latrines” - enclosed, sanitary bathroom facilities for areas with no access to sewers.

Young people participate in the projects, and in domestic projects including cleanupis, expeditions to South Florida’s three national partks and a Building Young Leaders program.
