The family of former Fla. Gov. and U.S. Sen. Bob Graham gave $5 million to the University of Florida to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Bob Graham Center for Public Service at the Gainesville campus.
The donation creates the largest endowed fund in the center’s history, UF said. It is launching a fundraising campaign to grow the endowment to $20 million by the end of 2026.
The money will support students who are pursuing careers in the public service, non-profit and philanthropic fields, UF said.
“Long ago, Bob and I dreamed of a place where students could not only study government and policy but also develop the character and courage to lead with integrity,” Adele Graham said during the Sept. 4 anniversary celebration, according to a press statement.
“It’s been thrilling to see that dream come to life through the students and programs here, and I’m filled with hope knowing it will continue into the future,” she said.
Daniel Robert “Bob” Graham was a member of the founding family in Miami Lakes, which was established by his father, Ernest R. “Cap” Graham.
Bob Graham died at 87 of natural causes on April 16, 2024. During 38 years of public service, he was a state representative, senator and the 38th governor. He served three terms in the U.S. Senate, until 2005.
In August, Fla. Gov. Ron DeSantis awarded the governor’s Medal of Freedom to his predecessor; Mrs. Graham presented it to the center.
Among guests at the anniversary celebration were the couple’s daughters: former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham; Cissy Graham McCullough, Arva Suzanne Graham Gibson and Kendall Graham.
During the fundraising campaign, the center will offer programming in Florida and in Washington, D.C. for alumni, supporters and community leaders, UF said.
