Kwanzaa festivities begin Dec. 26

     Kwanzaa will be observed from Dec. 26 - Jan. 1.  The holiday that dates to 1966 is a time for families to gather and remember ancestors’ histories and enjoy good food and music.

     There are seven principles of Kwanzaa listed on the National Museum of African American History and Culture website: Umoja (Unity); Kujichagulia (Self-determination); Ujima (Collective work and responsibility); Ujamaa (Cooperative economics); Nia (Purpose); Kuumba (Creativity) and Imani (Faith).

     Celebrations may include performances of poetry, music and dance. Each day, a candle is lighted as a principle is explored.

     All members of a family may participate in the rituals, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture lists activities and recipes and music that support the themes.
