Lights of Hope ceremony to remember loved ones lost to cancer

Supporters joined attorney Gloria M. Garcia at the Lights of Hope display and cancer fundraiser at Miami Lakes Town Hall on Aug. 27. It was a night to honor and remember those who were taken by the disease as well as pay tribute to those who are fighting it. Each personalized bag represented a cancer story, including that of Garcia’s sister, Maria D. “Mayoyi” Garcia, Garcia said. Garcia and Marie Korenstein, who is also volunteering with the American Cancer Society, planned to travel to Washington, DC this month for the national Lights of Hope display. They will represent Miami Lakes via the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network and want to convince members of Congress who represent South Florida to make cancer a national priority, Garcia said.
