M-D Public Works explains delay in opening NW 87 Ave

Community Wednesday, August 13, 2014

The Town of Miami Lakes and Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr.’s office have received numerous complaints from residents over the closure of the intersection of N.W. 87 Avenue and 170 Street. The following is information provided by Miami-Dade Public Works Department:

As part of the N.W. 87th Avenue Roadway Improvement Project, the installation of a 36” water main and the replacement of a 47” x 71” culvert crossing for the N.W. 170 Street Canal are required at the intersection of N.W. 87 Avenue and 170 Street.

In order to minimize traffic impacts, the intersection work began on June 9 (after the end of the 2013-14 school year), and every effort has been made to complete this work by August 15 (prior to the beginning of the 2014-15 school year).

Unfortunately, due to the inordinate amount of unforeseen underground utility conflicts encountered, the work has been delayed and the opening of the intersection prior to the start of the upcoming school year will not be achieved.

As such, and for the continued safety of the public, the existing/approved Maintenance of Traffic Plan, along with all current detours, will need to remain in place.

The current timeline for the opening of this intersection is projected for November 15, excluding any unforeseen conflicts.

The Public Works Department apologizes for any inconvenience this delay may cause. Please be assured that the County will continue to work diligently with the contractor to complete this work in the most safe and expeditious manner feasible.
