The Mater Lakes Academy Thespians have begun working on their winter musical, Disney’s High School Musical.

After a successful run of their last production, The Wizard of Oz, the Thespians are eager to return to the stage with a much more modern show.

High School Musical is a show many of MLA’s students will be familiar with, having grown up with the film. This stage adaptation carries the same tone as the original, with a few new fun surprises to keep audiences on their toes.

Long time fans will recognize their favorites scenes, while first time viewers will be delighted by the high energy songs and dances. High School Musical tells a story everyone can relate to – the tale of high school cliques, and what it means to fit in and be yourself.

The lead roles of Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez will be played by sophomore Lucas Menvielle and freshman Kaitlyn Gonzalez. Menvielle played the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, making this his second performance with the MLA Thespians. This is Gonzalez’s first major role in a Mater Lakes dramatic production, but she previously worked on The Wizard of Oz as well.

Ryan and Sharpay Evans, the brother-and-sister antagonists of the show, will be portrayed by seniors Jorge Lopez and Andrea Burns. This will be the first show with Mater Lakes for both performers, who have already shown tremendous talent and commitment to their roles.

High School Musical runs for three days, December 20 to 22, in the Lehman Theater at Miami Dade College North campus. Tickets are $10 at the door. For more information, visit the school’s website at www.materlakes.org.
