Miami-Dade Co. offers recycling of Christmas trees for Miami Lakes area customers

Community Wednesday, January 1, 2014

Miami Lakes area residents who receive curbside waste collection service from Miami-Dade County can recycle their Christmas trees by taking them to one of the county’s Trash and Recycling Centers, or the West Miami-Dade Home Chemical Collection Center. All trees brought in for recycling must be free of tree stands, lights, ornaments, tinsel and other decorations.

The trees will be converted into mulch, available free to service area residents on a first-come, first-served basis beginning in mid-January. In the northwest Miami-Dade area, Trash and Recycling Centers are open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the North Dade Landfill, 21500 N.W. 47 Avenue; Palm Springs North, 7870 N.W. 178 Street; and Golden Glades, 140 N.W. 160 Street.

The West Miami-Dade Home Chemical Collection Center is located at 8801 N.W. 58 Street. Christmas tree mulch will be available at the North Dade Landfill for northwest Miami-Dade area service area residents to pick up using their own bags or containers while supplies last.

Residents who choose not to drop off their Christmas tree have two options:

1. Residents may cut the tree into smaller pieces and place it inside their green waste cart for collection. The tree must fit entirely inside the waste cart. Trees placed next to the waste cart cannot be collected by the automated waste collection truck.

2. The other option is for residents to place the tree at the curbside no later than Tuesday, January 7, and it will be picked up after January 7.
