Miami Lakers deliver food to elders

With many elders needing help getting food during the pandemic, Miami Lakers have come together for them.
Always at Your Side Adult Day Care has partnered with the town’s Elderly Affairs Committee, Vicky Bakery and Hialeah human services organization S.T.E.P.S. in the Right Direction to provide food to those who are most frail and are without loved ones to care for them.
Miami-Dade County ordered adult day cares closed by April 3, leaving many older adults at home.
Alexandra Alonso, administrator of Always at Your Side, and the Elderly Affairs Committee identified those who are most in need.
“Visiting these seniors on a daily basis brings a smile to their face, and that is why I am doing this,” Alonso said. “I am thankful for my team who is assisting me.”
Alonso’s group is delivering meals that include donated sandwiches from Vicky Bakery to more than 50 residents.

Also serving neighbors is Giving Gators -- a non-profit group of parents and volunteers based out of Barbara Goleman Senior High School -- which has been collecting and donating groceries to people 65 and older in town and in Hialeah for several weeks.
The list of residents who receive bags of food has grown to 120 so far, according to Daylin Garcia of the Gators.
They also share food with Miami Lakes United Methodist Church for their meals program and to
Camillus House in Miami which serves homeless people.
The Gators have partnered with The Breanna Vergara Foundation. To donate food or volunteer email Daylin Garcia at daylin24@msn.com.
