Miami Lakers show up for victims of Hurricane Dorian

When Hurricane Dorian slammed the northern islands of the Bahamas, South Floridians rallied to their aid, and Miami Lakers did their part.
The devastation that struck Abaco Island and Grand Bahama over Labor Day weekend prompted local companies and residents to gather life-saving supplies that filled two rooms at town hall.
Brown and Brown Insurance and restaurants NQC Miami and Anacapri Miami Lakes donated supplies as did residents who packed up water, food, first-aid kits, flashlights, batteries and diapers for victims left with nothing after the Category 5 cyclone descended upon their homes.
Miami-Dade County officials arranged for three cabin cruisers to ship the goods from Miami Lakes and other municipalities to the island nation, Miami Lakes Town Manager Edward Pidermann said.
Miami Laker Chris Demby, owner of Systems Furniture Services, donated two trucks and pallets to load the supplies and drove them to the organizing zone at Tropical Park on Friday, Sept. 6. The town rented two additional trucks to deliver items that were donated late Friday night.
“It’s showing our outpouring of support for the Bahamian people,” Pidermann said. “Miami Lakes residents have demonstrated great support for the victims of Hurricane Dorian.”
Orlando Lara, 60, said he made two trips to town hall to donate cases of water and food.
“They are human beings and we must help each other in times like this,” said Lara, who lives in town and works for an airline. “If it was us, I’m sure they would do the same.”
Harold Korenstein, 62, helped pack the donations.
“The residents have been generous in assisting in the town’s effort to collect and send supplies to the victims,” he said.
