Miami Lakes Branch Library plans july activities

Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs that are available for the public during July:

For Children and Families:

South Florida Chamber Ensemble’s Super You – Join in celebrating superheroes and what makes each special. Listen to superhero-themed music and make your own superhero symbol based on your strengths. All ages welcome at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 5.

Libraries Rock! Board Game Hour – Enjoy an hour of playing classic board games while making new friends at the Library. Space is limited. Contact branch for registration. Event will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 7.

Children’s Art Workshop: Gaudi: Art Techniques – A special art project that teaches children how to create at in the style of renowned Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi. Space is limited, contact branch to register. Presented by Miami Children’s Museum. Event made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 14.

Libraries Rock! Crystallized Beach Rocks – Learn how to create colorful crystallized beach rocks using conventional materials. Space is limited, contact branch to register. Event best for ages 8-12 years at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17.

Libraries Rock! Lava Lamps – Learn how to create a lava lamp using conventional materials. Space is limited, contact branch to register. Best for ages 8-12 years at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 21.

Libraries Rock! Rock Band – Show off musical skills with Rock Band. Space is limited, contact branch to register. Best for ages 5 years and up at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 24.

Libraries Rock! Movies and stories for Kids – Watch some of our favorite movies with your family and friends. Movie of the month is “SherlockGnomes.” Made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 25.

Kids Yoga – A yoga session designed especially for children where participants will learn about relaxation and breathing techniques to calm the mind, increase concentration and focus, and develop confidence. Games, stories and other playful activities will stimulate kids’ imaginations and get their bodies moving – all while having fun. Best for ages 5 years and up. Made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 26.

Rock Star Balloons – Learn how to make rock star-themed balloon shapes. Presented by Balloon Experts. Space is limited. Made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 28.

Libraries Rock! LEGO Club – Let your imagination run wild as you build and create with LEGO. All ages welcome at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 31. 

For Teens:

Libraries Rock! Teen Game Night - Create your own adventure with role-playing games. You may also play chess, Magic:The Gathering, Rick and move. For ages 12 and up at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays, July 9, 23 and 30.

Libraries Rock! Teen Club – Convert your old rock band shirt into canvas art! Bring your own t-shirt and canvas provided at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10.

Libraries Rock! Hour of Code – Broaden knowledge in computer science. Hour of Code aims to demystify coding and prove that anyone can learn the basics of this useful skill. Best for ages 8-18 years at 5 p.m. on Monday, July 16.

Teen Club presents Libraries Rock! – Rock your fandom with the game Kahoot. Best for ages 12-18 years at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24.

Libraries Rock! Lip Sync Battle – Teens, bring your epic lip syncing skills to unleash your inner rock star. Best for ages 12-18 years at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31.   

For Adults: 

Prediabetes and Diabetes: Learning, Moving and Eating Healthy – Learn from Florida International University doctors how to prevent and live with diabetes. Ages 18 years and up at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11.

Book Discussion Group – This month’s selection is “Hillbilly Elegy” by J.D. Vance at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17.

USCIS Information Table – United States Citizenship and Immigration staff will provide information, materials, and answer general question about the citizenship process at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18. 

Mario Diaz-Balart Outreach Table - A member of Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart’s staff will be available to discuss federal issues and address any concerns a constituent may have with a federal agency, at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25.

Strum the Lute: Tai Chi for Beginners – Library staff will lead a beginners’ tai chi class. Follow along and practice the gentle movements of this ancient tradition. For ages 18 years and up at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 27.

Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.

Happy Father’s Day! Young library patrons create special paintings to show their love for Dads during a class in early June.
