Miami Lakes Branch Library plans May events

Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs that are available for the public during May:

For Children and Families:

STEM Saturdays – Experience a hands-on lesson where FIU undergraduate and medical students teach how a heart works by dissecting a real sheep heart. Scheduled at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 5.

Science in the City – Enjoy hands-on lessons infused with experiments to spark interest in STEM. Each new lesson builds upon the previous lesson. For ages 8-18 years old. Space is limited so contact branch to register. Meets at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 26.

Talking is Teaching. Talk, Read, Sing for Toddlers en dos idiomas – Bilingual stories, songs and activities for toddlers. Best for ages 18 months to 3 years old. Space is limited. Scheduled at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 17.

Movies and Stories for Kids – Enjoy watching some favorite movies with families and friends. Made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, May 9, 16 and 30.

Zumbini – Happy hour for parents and baby to sing, dance and play in bonding with their child. Made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 10.

Paws to Read – A reading program designed to improve the literacy skills of children through the assistance of therapy dogs who serve as literacy mentors. Bring a book or choose one from the library collection at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 12.

The Art of Taiko Drumming – A fun-filled performance covering the history of Taiko and the music of Japan, followed by a chance to play on the big drums. All ages are welcome. Made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 19.

For Teens:

Dungeons and Dragons and more - Play this fantasy role playing game and create your own adventure. Also play Chess, Magic: The Gathering, Risk and more. For ages 12 and up at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays, May 7, 14 and 21.

Teen Club – Play video games, watch anime, draw, play Dungeons & Dragons, or discuss books, at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, May 22 and 29.

Fact or Fictions? Get the Real News! With so much information from so many different sources - TV, social media, blogs, news websites, can you tell the difference between real news and fake news? Be a part of the News Literacy Project and pick up skills needed to separate fact from fiction. Presented in partnership with the News Literacy Project and made possible by the Knight Foundation on Tuesday, May 22, at 4 p.m.

Teen Club Presents: Foldscopes – Discover Foldscopes, a portable and versatile microscope made mostly of paper that magnifies the microscopic world without the bulk of conventional research microscopes. Made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8.

For Adults: 

Meditation Classes – Join in for meditation derived from Raja Yoga, a discipline that helps develop inner calm, clear thinking and personal well being. Scheduled for 11 a.m. on Fridays, May 4, 11, 18 and 25.

iLuma (inter-generational literacy using music and art) is an arts integration program that combines music, literature, world culture and art with reading comprehension, memory and listening skills. Program is open to children from VPK to 5th grade and seniors looking to improve their memory skills. Presented by the South Florida Chamber Ensemble at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23.

Mario Diaz-Balart Outreach Table - A member of Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart’s staff will be available to discuss federal issues and address any concerns a constituent may have with a federal agency, at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23.

Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.
