Miami Lakes Branch Library sets January events

Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs that are available for the public during January:

For Children and Families:

Science in the City – Enjoy hands-on lessons infused with experiments to spark interest in STEM. Each new lesson builds upon the previous lesson. For ages 8-18 years old. Space is limited so contact branch to register. Meets at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 27.

Homeschool Science Class – Children learn how to create different science projects. Space is limited. Contact branch to register. Scheduled at noon on Wednesday, January 17.

iLUMA (inter-generational literacy using music and art) is an arts integration program that combines music, literature, world culture and art with reading comprehension, memory and listening skills. Program is open to children from VPK to 5th grade and seniors looking to improve their memory skills. Presented by the South Florida Chamber Ensemble at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 31.

Library Lego Club – Imagination is key as participants build and create with LEGO. All ages are welcome at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 20.

STEM Saturdays – An interactive lesson and hands-on activities with FIU undergraduate and medical students. For ages 5-15 years old. Contact stemsaturday@gmail.com for more information. Scheduled at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 6.

Movies and Stories for Kids – Favorite movies for family and friends. Call the branch for movie listings. Event presented by Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, January 10, 17 and 31.

Talking is Teaching. Talk, Read, Sing for Toddlers en dos idiomas – Bilingual stories, songs and activities for toddlers. Best for ages 18 months to 3 years old. Space is limited. Scheduled at 11 a.m. on Thursdays, January 11, 18 and 25.

Paws to Read – A reading program designed to improve the literacy skills of children through the assistance of therapy dogs who serve as literacy mentors. Parents may bring a book or choose one from the library collection. Event scheduled at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 13.

For Teens:

Dungeons and Dragons Club - Play this fantasy role playing game and create your own adventure. For ages 13 and up at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays, January 8 and 29.

P2PU Presents Learning Circles – A study group designed for people who would like to take online courses while interacting with fellow learners. Featured course: “The Rise of Superheroes and Their Impact on Pop Culture.” To register, visit https://learningcircles.p2pu.org/en/signup/miami-lakes-library-411/register. Meets at 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, January 9, 16 and 30.

Teen Club Presents: Movie Night – “Spiderman: Homecoming,” PG-13, presented by Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 2.

Teen Club – Play video games, watch anime, draw, play Dungeons & Dragons, or discuss books, at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, January 9, 23 and 30.

For Adults: 

Meditation Classes – Join in for meditation derived from Raja Yoga, a discipline that helps develop inner calm, clear thinking and personal well being. Scheduled for 11 a.m. on Fridays, January 12, 19 and 26.

Book Discussion Group – Call or visit the branch for this month’s title. Scheduled for 6:30  p.m. on Tuesday, January 16.

USCIS Information Table – United States Citizenship and Immigration Service staff will provide information, materials, and answer questions about the citizenship process, at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, January 22.

Mario Diaz-Balart Outreach Table – A member of Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart’s staff will be available to discuss federal issues and address any concerns a constituent may have with a federal agency from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 24.

Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.
