Miami Lakes Library programs in September

 The Miami-Dade County Library branch in Miami Lakes is offering the following online and in-person classes. Space is limited. In most cases, you must register in advance.  Free 2022 Hurricane preparation guides are available at all branches.

Homework Help & Tutoring Program -- In Person  Funded in part by The Children's Trust.

Sat., Sept. 3, 10, 17 and 14   10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Certified teachers meet students in small groups for an hour to tutor them in reading, math and science.

The Old Man and the Mice  In person

Tues., Sept. 6. 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

In this story, a kind old man befriends a band of mice and receives a magic mallet. A greedy neighbor plans to get one for himself. There is a craft project.

Presented by the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens.

Ages 3 - 12

Sand Art  In person

Tues. Sept. 7     4 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Materials will be provided to create your own colorful sand art.

Ages 9+

The Mother Cat  In person

Tues., Sept. 13. 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

A tale of bravery and parental love is based on a true story about a mother cat who rescued her kittens from a burning building in New York City. There will be a craft project. Presented by the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens.

Teen Library Card Design Contest

Wed., Sept. 14   4 p.m.  – 5 p.m.

Want to see your artwork all over Miami-Dade County?  Join the staff to learn about how your design could be printed on 10,000 cards in libraries around the county.

Work on your entry design and use library resources.

Ages 13 – 19

The Three Magic Charms   In person

Tues., Sept. 20   11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

A young boy uses three paper charms to outwit a wicked mountain witch. There will be a craft project. Presented by the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens.

Ages 3 – 12

Chess Enthusiasts    In person

Tues., Sept. 20   6 p.m. – 7 p.m.

 Sharpen your skills by playing other fans of the game.  Ages 8+

Lego and Goobi Challenge

Wed., Sept. 21   4 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Use either Legos or Goobi construction sets to complete engineering challenges.

Ages 8 – 12 and 12 – 18

Scratch Coding Basics   Online event

Mon., Sept. 26  4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Learn how to program, make interactive games, animations, art and stories using the online platform Scratch. Registration required.

The Goblin, the Water Imp, and the Thunder God    In person

Tues., Sept. 27 

11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

A charcoal maker’s clever son outwits three mischievous creatures. There will also be a craft project. Presented by Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. 

Ages 3 - 12 yrs. Registration required.

Teen Advisory Board Presents: Banned Books Week Selfie Station

Wed., Sept. 28   4 p.m. – 5 p.m. 

Did you get caught with a banned book? Use your phone at our selfie station and take a photo in defiance of censorship. Celebrate the freedom to read!

    The library is at 6699 Windmill Gate Rd.  It is open Mon. - Thurs.,  9:30 a.m. - 8 p.m.; Fri. and Sat. 9:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.  The library is closed Sundays and some Mondays.
