Miami Lakes resident Broderick Schwinghammer was elected president of the Youth Advisory Committee to The Children's Trust of Miami-Dade County.

The Children's Trust emphasizes collaboration and partnership in order to provide the programs and services needed by children and parents county wide. These programs include reading, anti-violence, health screenings, parenting skills and art programs.

The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is comprised of high school students from around Miami-Dade County which serve as the youth voice of The Children's Trust. YAC creates interactive program for youth, advocates to elected official and advises on issues effecting youth today.

Schwinghammer is a graduate of Miami Lakes K-8 center and an incoming senior at the MAST Academy on Virginia Key. He served as a member on the YAC Board in 2011 and as corresponding secretary on the YAC Board last year. With YAC he has lobbied on children's issues in Tallahassee and participated in hundreds of hours of community service projects.

"I love to serve others and being on The Children's Trust allows me to help be a voice for all children in Dade which is a great honor," said Schwinghammer.

An "A" student, Schwinghammer is the treasurer of his class, a varsity swimmer, Senior Patrol Leader of Boy Scout Troop 566 chartered to Our Lady of the Lakes Church, and he is currently working on his Eagle Project – the creation of a park on abandoned property in Miami Lakes. He was also Miami Lakes' student representative to the All American City Competition in Denver, Colorado. He is the brother Chloe and Aidan, and son of Adriana and Sean Schwinghammer.

For high school students interested in serving on The Children's Trust Youth Advisory Committee, applications are available at www.thechildrenstrust.org/youth-advisory-committee. Application deadline is August 26.
