ML Library Branch sets activities for July

Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs that are available for the public during July:
For Children and Families:

Library Lego Challenge – Let imagination run wild to build and create with LEGO. All ages welcome at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 15.

Movies and Stories for Kids – Enjoy watching some of our favorite movies with your family and friends. Call for visit branch for movie listings. Presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, July 12 and 19.

Storytelling with Scratch! – Create and share digital stories and animations. Use the computer to design your own stories. No previous computer experience is necessary. CS First Storytelling Club. Contact the branch to register. For ages 8-12 years old at 4 p.m. on Mondays, July 10. 17, 24 and 31.

Build a Better: Create Your Own Galaxy – Create a cosmic masterpiece using unconventional materials. Space is limited and contact the branch to register. Scheduled for 11 a.m.. on Thursday, July 6.

Dr. Fitz Wildlife Show – Join Dr. Fitz from Fitz Wildlife Adventures for a hands-on wildlife presentation. Kids will get to see and touch lizards, turtles, tortoises, tarantulas, scorpions and a very large snake. Presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board  at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 8. 

Build a Better World: Popsicle Stick Craft – Construct objects using unconventional materials. Space is limited and contact the branch to register. Scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 13.

Tween Book Club - Children between ages 8 and 12 meet, read, and discuss books once a month. Call the branch for this month’s title. Meets at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 12.
Minecraft Challenge – Test your gaming skills at the Minecraft Challenge. Use the branch controllers or bring your own. Registration required. Call the branch for more information. Meets at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 20.

Dinosaur Exploration – Learn about these ancient animals and see actual fossils. Play paleontologist and dig through Jurassic sand. Learn about different dinosaurs with the “Do the Dinosaur” sing-along. Presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. . on Saturday, July 22.

Build a Better World with Science – Join in a fun Science Show with Dr. Fitz. Kids will get to learn some cool science stuff such as how to make corny goo and green slime. Presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 27.

Music & Movement en Dos Idiomas – Music aids brain development and integrates the senses from a very young age. Enjoy an interactive bilingual music session while improving socialization, communication and listening skills. Suitable to those with, and without special needs, and best for ages 18 months to 5 years. Presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 29.

Reading Circle – Join a special reading circle hosted by Read to Learn Books for Free. Special presenters, including Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid and Councilmember Ceasar Mestre will read their favorite children’s stories out loud. Joining in will be a book-loving Princess. Bring new and gently used children’s books to the branch to donate to Read to Learn Books for Free which distributes over 150,000 free books to families in 40 locations all over Miami. Scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 29.   

Teen Club: Build a Better World – Who can build a better marshmallow launcher? Teams will choose from a few designs and strive to build the best devices that send marshmallows flying. For ages 12-18 years old at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11.

For Adults: 

USCIS Information Table – U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service staff will provide information, materials and answer general questions about the citizenship process, at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 24.

Mario Diaz-Balart Outreach Table – A member of Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart’s staff will be available to discuss federal issues and address any concerns a constituent may have with a federal agency from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26.

Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.

Other news:

A total of 50 Miami Lakes Branch Library patrons participated in the Building Noise event as part of the Build a Better World series in June.

Nineteen youth Miami Lakes Library patrons learned about coding during the Hour of Code event at the branch in June.

Miami Lakes Branch Library host a Teen Club “Upcycle Your Clothes” program with 28 participants in attendance. Activities included a sewing workshop, a rhinestoning workshop and a hodgepodge workshop. The program was made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board.

Firefighters from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Station 1 in Miami Lakes visited the Miami Lakes Branch Library in June to provide fire safety tips to young patrons.
