In an effort to expand Miami-Dade County’s tree canopy by leveraging local resources, Neat Streets Miami awarded the Town of Miami Lakes a Street Tree Matching Grant in the amount of $37,422.55 for the Miami Lakes West Lake Reforestation Phase 3 Project.
In its fourth year, Neat Streets Miami’s street tree program awarded 15 organizations matching grants to advance the Million Trees initiative, a community-wide effort to achieve a 30 percent tree canopy for the county.
Utilizing previous Neat Streets Matching Grants, Miami Lakes completed Phase 1 and Phase 2 West Lakes Reforestation projects. The Phase 3 area now has a mix of canopy including palms, invasive and exotic trees that are not consistent with the tree canopy throughout the town.
The Phase 3 goal is to plant an estimated 114 trees from a variety of species and incorporating a tree planting and removal program to add a uniform canopy to an area that needs canopy trees.
