Optimist Club adds Hall of Fame for 50th anniversary

Community Thursday, April 4, 2019

To commemorate its 50th anniversary this year, the Optimist Club of Miami Lakes will enshrine Jack McCall into the organization’s inaugural Hall of Fame Class of 2019, honoring a man who devoted his life to coaching kids and helped improved their academic skills in the classroom for 45 years.
On Saturday, July 27, at Don Shula’s Hotel in Miami Lakes, McCall is among four inductees who will be honored for their achievements as volunteers and dedication to the Optimist Club over the years.
McCall will be inducted posthoumously for creating the Green Machine team for his Athletics T-Ball club.
He adopted the moniker years ago as the Little League version of the 1970s Cincinnati Reds’ Big Red Machine and because of his Irish heritage.
McCall, who died last month at the age of 83, joined the Optimist Club in 1973.
In addition, the Golden Anniversary event includes a golf tournament and dinner where the organization will recognize past Optimist Club presidents and members, current members, Roland Gomez Scholarship award winners and sponsors that financially supported the club over the years.
The golf tournament will kick off the event at 8 a.m., at Shula’s Golf Club, and the proceeds will benefit Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.
The cost for dinner is $35 with an exception for the organization’s past presidents.
