The Monsignor Pace High School (Pace) community held their annual Tons of Love food drive throughout the month of November where students, parents, teachers, staff, alumni and friends were invited to participate.
The food drive was initially established by former Pace faculty member, sister Carol Jean Willie in the 1980’s and is now organized by Pace’s Mission Club. For over 30 years, the month-long event has motivated students by turning charity into a friendly competition. Each food item is assigned a set number of points, and the grade level with the most points at the end of the competition wins the coveted Tons of Love trophy.
On November 16, the last day of school before the Thanksgiving break, Pace celebrated its annual Thanksgiving and Tons of Love Mass. Following the mass, the student body as well as various clubs were recognized for their service. Mission Club moderators Dr. David Masters and Nelson Bonet announced that a ton and half of food was collected this year, enough to provide Thanksgiving meals to over 500 needy families.
The class of 2019 won the Tons of Love trophy, and now hold the title of being the only class in the school’s history to cling on to this award for four consecutive years.
All of the food collected will be delivered to local parishes, ministries, pantries and food banks throughout the South Florida area.
