As proposed by School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman, the Miami-Dade School Board voted unanimously to promote and encourage participation in the 2014 Miami National College Fair, and also endorsed the 2014 Annual Teen Driver Safety Public Service Announcement (PSA) and Poster Contest that is open to all District Senior High schools.

The College Fair, scheduled for February 9, noon to 4 p.m., will have representatives from more than 150 colleges and universities to provide information on admissions, financial aid, entrance exams and other related topics. The Fair is held at the Doubletree Miami Mart Airport Hotel & Convention Center at 777 N.W. 72 Avenue, in Miami.

"The College Fair provides parents and students with excellent information about educational opportunities and choices," said Hantman, who has co-chaired the fair's local committee for 18 consecutive years.

The Teen Driver Safety Contest, now in its sixth year and similar to last year, will focus on the dangers of distracted driving, with heightened emphasis on the no-texting-while-driving law.

"As part of my long-standing safety initiatives, the contest encourages and promotes pedestrian and vehicular safety," said Hantman. The contest will run from January to March 2014. One PSA and one poster each will be picked as winners of first, second and third place awards.

The winning entries will be showcased for a three-month period on WLRN, one winner per month for each category, after the televised School Board meetings. Finally, winners will be recognized during the April 2014 School Board and MPO Governing Board meetings.
