Thanksgiving is a special time of year for one Miami Lakes family, and not just because it’s a national holiday.
It’s also the time, 15 years ago, that Juan Chaparro found an injured stray kitten in the Graham Dairy Lake neighborhood. Though she was skittish, Chaparro said he was able to catch the mewing black kitty.
He and his wife Carol Ann Steele got the feline’s ailments fixed at the vet and brought her home to live a safe, indoor life.
The couple named their kitten Shadow. She has reigned over their townhome ever since.
“I’m hoping she’ll live forever,” Chaparro said of his pet whose green eyes sometimes appear to be gold. “She still gets bursts of energy and likes to play with her toys, take naps or ask for food.”
Shadow enjoys basking in the sun, having a chicken treat from Pollo Tropical or sweet ham from Publix, he said.
She dislikes the sounds of the doorbell, landscaping machines or the Roomba vacuum.
