Pets of Miami Lakes

Nela is short for canela, which in Spanish means cinnamon and is the color of the glossy coat on this American Pit Bull Terrier, or Pit Bull, her owner Elizabeth Carmenate says.

When she was a student at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Carmenate rescued her 3-year-old dog.

“I didn’t clip her ears,” Carmenate says. “That’s how I found her.”

Though the breed can have an aggressive reputation, Carmenate said Nela underwent training.

“She is not mean at all,” Carmenate said. “She’s very friendly and energetic.”

Nela lives in Miami Lakes with Carmenate and her roommate, Sabrina Monzon.

“We’re an all-girl household,” Carmenate said.

They live near Main Street and often walk in the neighborhood.

“We get our 10,000 steps in every day,” she said.

Nela has a lot of dog friends in town and knows their schedules.

“She goes to the window and watches when they pass by, right on cue,” Carmenate said. “She’s a very chill dog, except when she gets the zoomies [and races around their apartment].”

Nela also thinks she is much smaller than she is and will squeeze onto any available space on the couch to be near her humans.
