Residents are encouraged to help reduce costly sewer clogs

The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) is asking Miami-Dade residents to help reduce and eliminate costly clogs within the county’s nearly 6,800 miles of sewer lines due to “flushable” wipes.

Out of sight doesn’t mean out of mind. There is a growing national problem of wipes in pipes that result in increased sewer clogs, broken pumps, and other large pieces of sewer machines and equipment. The culprit is pre-moistened towelettes in the form of baby wipes, cleaning wipes, paper towels and feminine products.

These products do not breakdown within the sewer system and can result in costly clogs as well as sewer backups within homes. The department asks for residents to be mindful of what is flushed as the unseen damage can result in millions of dollars in repair work or replacement, not to mention possibly affecting service delivery.

It is recommended that only toilet paper be flushed down the toilet and all other products to be disposed of in the trash. It is the priority of the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department to provide safe, reliable service to its customers.
